His visit is scheduled for June 18th, just two days before Nelson Mandela arrives for his U.S. tour. The plan is for Mandela to meet Bush on June 25th — after the deKlerk meeting. But the plan needs to be changed. By moving deKlerk to the front of the line, Bush is sending the wrong signal. But it's not only a question of who goes to the White House first, while Mandela has sat down with deKlerk, he has requested that other world leaders keep their distance. Bush's invitation is premature. Economic sanctions and political isolation have been major factors in bringing the apartheid regime to the negotiating table. Relaxing the pressure now only serves to weaken the ANC's position. While talks about talks have begun, substantive change has not taken place. The fundamental laws of apartheid remain on the books and deKlerk continues to voice his opposition to majority rule. By appearing friendly to the South African president, President Bush is positioning himself on the wrong side, appearing to offer comfort and support to the Pretoria regime. deKlerk is still the president of apartheid. U.S. policy-makers must know that and, if they don't, they need to be reminded while it's not too late to reverse gears. That's my view, I'd like to know yours.
