Bruskin describes the life of a high school student in New Haven in the 1930s, focusing on his friends (mostly the children of Jewish immigrants), classes, and ex-curricular activies. After graduating from Hillhouse, he attended Yale, but, due to the depression, was forced to live at home and commute to school. He discusses the difficulties caused by these circumstances, as well as the anti-semitism faced at Yale. Bruskin Majored in French, but had trouble finding a teaching job during the Depression.
